Explore Panama's Highlands

Cool air, cloud forest, and coffee farms. Panama's highlands offer a slower pace without sacrificing modern infrastructure.

Step outside here and the landscape does the rest. Cloud forest, cold rivers, and volcanic ridgelines sit within a short walk of most homes, and the birdsong starts before the coffee does.

Around Boquete and Volcán, trails climb toward the nesting grounds of the resplendent quetzal, while the slopes of Barú reward early risers with a view of two oceans. In El Valle, the walls of an ancient crater hold the whole town in a bowl of green.

Birdwatchers, gardeners, and weekend hikers find their pace here quickly, and homes are increasingly designed to blur the line between the living room and the green just beyond it.

Farmers market fresh produce

The breadbasket of Panama

The cool, volcanic highlands feed much of the country. In Tierras Altas, the districts of Cerro Punta and Volcán climb in terraces of strawberries, lettuce, onions, and dairy, supplying markets from David to Panama City.

You can taste the difference: produce reaches the table shortly after harvest, weekend markets overflow with what grew up the road, and the coffee ranks among the finest in the world.

Land is fertile, gardens flourish year round, and a self-sufficient life of small holdings and fresh food is within easy reach.

A Weekend Getaway, or a Permanent One

Not every highland home has to be a full relocation. For many Panamanians, El Valle de Antón is the classic weekend escape, a cool green crater just two hours from Panama City and generations deep in family retreats.

The appeal is the balance: you get mountain air, forest trails, thermal springs, and Sunday markets, all without the distance of Chiriquí. Close enough for a spontaneous drive, far enough to feel like another world.
