The Pensionado is Panama’s longest-standing residency program and the reason the country sits near the top of most international retirement lists. It is open to retirees of any nationality who can demonstrate a lifetime pension of at least US$1,000 per month from a recognized government or private source. There is no investment requirement, no language test, and no cap on the number of visas issued each year.

Once granted, the Pensionado is permanent. There is no annual renewal; you simply maintain the underlying pension and avoid absences from Panama of more than two consecutive years. The visa also carries a generous catalogue of resident discounts (medical, transport, entertainment) and an exemption on import duties for household goods and a vehicle, both of which are unusual outside of Panama.

• Lifetime pension income of at least US$1,000 per month (US$750 if you own qualifying Panamanian real estate of US$100,000 or more). Spouses can be added with US$250 additional per month.
• Pension letter from the issuing institution stating that the pension is lifetime and not subject to early termination.
• Clean criminal background check from your country of residence, apostilled.
• Apostilled supporting documents: passport, birth certificate, and marriage certificate where applicable.
• Health certificate issued by a licensed Panamanian physician after arrival.

Most applicants enter Panama on a tourist visa, file the application through a licensed immigration attorney, and receive a provisional residency card within weeks. The permanent card typically follows in three to five months.
