Contadora & The Pearl Islands

The Archipiélago de las Perlas is a cluster of more than two hundred Pacific islands and cays in the Gulf of Panama, roughly fifty kilometres southeast of Panama City. The largest islands are Isla del Rey, Isla San José, Pedro González, Saboga, and Contadora; only Contadora has meaningful tourism infrastructure and a small year-round residential population. The surrounding waters are part of a humpback whale migration corridor, and the snorkelling and diving on the shallower reefs are among the best within easy reach of the capital.

The international footprint here is small and concentrated on Contadora and on a handful of private homes and small developments on Saboga, San José, and Pedro González. Access is by short flight from Albrook Airport (around twenty minutes) or by ferry from Panama City (around two hours), with private boats filling in elsewhere.

Life on the Perlas is built around the water. Snorkelling and diving over the surrounding reefs, sport fishing for billfish and tuna, sailing between anchorages, and whale-watching trips during the southern migration (roughly July through October) are the everyday rhythms. Several beaches on Contadora and Saboga rank among the best in the country, and the lower density compared with the mainland Pacific resorts is part of the appeal.

Contadora is the most developed island, with a few small hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, an airstrip, and a modest year-round population. The other inhabited islands are quieter and more residential, with smaller villages and a strong fishing and pearl-diving heritage. Most goods, including building materials and many groceries, are still brought across from the mainland by ferry or private boat.

The international community is small and self-selected, leaning heavily toward retirees, sailors, and remote workers with the patience and resources to manage island logistics. Spanish is the working language, with English common in tourism-facing businesses on Contadora. Connectivity varies by island; many residents combine fixed wireless with cellular data and a backup plan.

Contadora has a small clinic for routine primary care and minor injuries; the other islands rely on visiting medical staff and on basic public health posts. For anything beyond that, residents fly or take the ferry to Panama City, which has the country's leading private hospitals and is around twenty minutes by air.

The practical picture is that Las Perlas suits healthy years and routine care, with the understanding that anything serious involves a trip to the capital. Most international residents pair a Panama City hospital for annual check-ups and any specialist visits with a small local clinic on the islands.

The Perlas have small Panamanian public schools on the inhabited islands serving the local population. There are no international schools on the archipelago, and bilingual options are limited.

Families with school-age children rarely live on the islands full-time; those who do typically homeschool or maintain a second residence in Panama City for the school week. Las Perlas is most often chosen by retirees, sailors, and remote workers without school-age children.
